About Me

Meet Sydney

Hi! I'm Sydney, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and EMDR-trained therapist in Virginia. I currently provide therapy services through Brambleton Assessment & Counseling Center, offering telehealth to clients throughout Virginia. I've been working in the mental health field since 2019, with experience in case management, substance use treatment, crisis intervention, individual and group therapy, and supporting individuals navigating co-occurring disorders and other mental health concerns. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Sociology from Roanoke College in 2019 and my Master of Social Work through Radford University School of Social Work in 2022. My work is informed by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Trauma-Informed Care, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). I believe therapy should be a space where you feel comfortable being yourself, feel heard without judgment, and have a say in your own healing. My approach to therapy is warm, collaborative, and individualized. I believe you are the expert on your own life, and my role is to work alongside you as we explore your experiences, build on your strengths, and find approaches that feel right for you. I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to therapy or in telling someone else what their life should look like. We'll figure things out together, whether that means making sense of old patterns, navigating what's happening right now, or trying something new. Your voice matters in that process, and it's okay if what you need from therapy changes along the way. When I'm not working, I'm usually spending time with my dogs, spending time with family, cooking, or trying new experiences. I love a cozy day at home, but I also enjoy getting out of the house and doing something fun. A good balance of both is my kind of lifestyle!

Common questions

How much does a session cost?+

Session costs depend on your insurance plan and benefits. I accept several insurance plans, and I encourage you to reach out to verify your coverage and any expected out-of-pocket costs before your first session.

What insurance do you accept?+

I am in-network with Aetna, Anthem, Cigna/Evernorth, Medicaid, Medicare, Optum, Sentara Health Plans, TRICARE, and UnitedHealthcare. Coverage and benefits vary by plan, so I recommend verifying your benefits before your first session.

Do you offer online or in person sessions?+

I offer telehealth sessions only to clients throughout Virginia, allowing you to access therapy from the comfort and privacy of your own space.

How long will I need therapy?+

Everyone's needs and goals are different, so there is no set timeline for therapy. We'll work together at a pace that feels right for you and adjust as your needs change.

Is everything confidential?+

Absolutely! Therapy is a space where you can feel comfortable sharing openly without judgment. Your privacy is important to me, and what you share stays private, with a few exceptions that we'll discuss together before getting started.

What is EMDR therapy?+

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a type of therapy that helps you process traumatic or unresolved experiences that may still affect you today. During EMDR, I'll guide you to focus on a memory while using back-and-forth eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation, such as alternating taps or sounds. EMDR can help memories feel less like they're happening in the present, reduce the emotional distress connected to them, and address negative beliefs about yourself that may have developed from those experiences. The goal isn't to make you forget what happened, but to help those memories feel less overwhelming so they have less impact on your daily life.

Who May Benefit from EMDR?+

EMDR may be helpful for people who have experienced trauma or stressful life events, struggle with persistent emotional overwhelm, or experience intrusive memories and reminders of the past. It may also help those dealing with negative beliefs about themselves, grief or loss, or attachment-related trauma. You may benefit from EMDR if past experiences continue to affect your emotions, relationships, sense of self, or daily life, even when you know you're safe in the present.

What Can I expect from EMDR?+

Everyone's journey is different, and we will move at a pace that feels right for you. You are in control of how fast or slow we go, and we can pause at any time. We'll start by getting to know you, exploring your goals, and building coping skills and resources to help you feel grounded and supported. Together, we'll assess your readiness for EMDR processing before beginning that part of the work. One of the benefits of EMDR is that you don't have to share every detail of an experience for the process to be helpful. Throughout therapy, we'll work together to make sure you feel comfortable, supported, and ready to move forward. The length of therapy varies from person to person depending on your experiences, needs, and goals. There is no one-size-fits-all timeline.
